FOOSA Philharmonic is a pre-professional orchestra that allows advanced musicians of college and high school age* to enjoy a side-by-side performance experience with our outstanding faculty members. This year’s program features Szymanowski’s Concert Overture and Mahler’s Symphony No. 7.
Thomas Loewenheim has built an international career that seamlessly blends cello performance, conducting, and teaching. He has toured extensively across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East, showcasing his talents as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician.
A dedicated educator, Loewenheim frequently presents master classes both nationally and internationally. He serves as Professor of Cello and Director of Orchestras at California State University, Fresno, Music Director and conductor of the Youth Orchestras of Fresno, and founding Artistic Director of the FOOSA Festival/Fresno Summer Orchestra Academy.
Renowned for his ability to elevate any orchestra to peak performance efficiently and enjoyably, Loewenheim is highly sought after on the honor orchestra circuit. His unique blend of respect for music’s history and enthusiasm for neglected and under-appreciated works has led to numerous conducting invitations throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. As a conductor, he has collaborated with esteemed soloists including violinists Vadim Gluzman, Richard Lin, and Rachel Barton Pine; cellists Lynn Harrell, Clive Greensmith, and Brinton Smith; and pianists Peter Klimo, Steven Vanhauwaert, and Jeremy Denk.
Artistic Director Thomas Loewenheim and Executive Director Catherine Marchese have created a partnership between the Youth Orchestras of Fresno and Fresno State, with essential support from Granville Homes. Additional supporters include Bonner Family Foundation, the California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, our exceptionally generous FOOSA faculty, and our exceptionally generous FOOSA friends. Feel free to join the fun!
