Hyein Choi, originally from South Korea, began her musical journey at the age of four, developing a deep passion for the piano that has shaped her distinguished career. Known for her dynamic interpretations and innovative approach, Hyein holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Yonsei University, a Master of Music, and a Performance Diploma from Indiana University under Professor Emile Naoumo . She completed her Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree at the University of Minnesota School of Music, guided by Professor Alexander Braginsky.
In addition to classical repertoire, Hyein actively engages in contemporary music performances, new music ensembles, and interdisciplinary projects. Her versatility shines through her participation in world premieres and collaborative works, showcasing her commitment to expanding the piano's expressive range.
Her performances have garnered critical acclaim and recognition in competitions, including Third Place in the American Classical Young Music Award, Second Place in the Marker and Pioneer International Music Competition (MAP-IMC) in 2021, and winning the Annual Concerto Competition at the University of Minnesota in 2023. As a dedicated educator, she has served as an Associate Instructor at Indiana University and a Lecturer at the University of Minnesota. Currently, she is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music at St. Olaf College, where she inspires the next generation of musicians with her passion for teaching.
